Rubella (also known as epidemic roseola, German measles, liberty measles or three-day measles) is a disease caused by the Rubella virus. It is often a mild illness, with symptoms of sore throat, low-grade fever, and a rash on the body. The virus usually enters the body through the nose or throat. Like most viruses living along the respiratory tract, it is transmitted from person to person by tiny droplets that are inhaled. Rubella can pose a serious risk if transmitted from a mother to her developing baby if a woman is infected while she is pregnant, especially during the first trimester. The baby is at risk for having congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). The most common symptoms of CRS include heart defects, deafness, cataracts, intellectual disabilities, and liver or spleen damage.[CDC: Rubella] Source: Regenstrief LOINC

The hemagglutination-inhibition assay (HAI) can be used to identify subtypes of hemagglutinin producing viruses, such as Influenza. HAI can also be used to identify the subtype-specificity of antibodies against the virus. Normally, Influenza's hemagglutinin glycoprotein binds to receptors on the surface of red blood cells, causing them to agglutinate. If antibodies specific to the virus are present in the patient sample, they will bind to the virus, which prevents the virus from binding to the red blood cells and therefore prevents agglutination. To determine which subtype of virus is present, a viral isolate is tested against a series of antibodies with known subtype specificities. Whichever antibody inhibits red cell agglutination identifies the viral subtype. Similarly, antibody specificity is identified by testing the patient sample against known virus subtypes.
