Term Description

Triiodothyronine to thyroxine (T3/T4) ratio is used to assess thyroid function and for the diagnosis of borderline thyrotoxicosis, euthyroid sick syndrome, iodine deficiency, thyrotoxicosis factitia, autonomous nodules of the thyroid gland, and in post-treated hyperthyroid patients to distinguish a typical hyperthyroidism from destructive thyroiditis. Mortoglou et. al. (2004) reported that a ratio of total T3/T4 >18.9 suggests Graves' disease or toxic multinodular goiter and T3/T4 <16 suggests subacute or silent thyroiditis.
