The "Probe.mag capture" Method has been deprecated and replaced with the more general "Probe" Method since the "mag capture" portion represents how the nucleic acids are isolated, which is not a distinction made in the LOINC Method for molecular tests. Given that updating the Method would change the meaning of the term, a new term was created to replace the existing term as recommended by the Special Topics workgroup on PCR-based Methods and approved by the LOINC Lab Committee at the June 2017 meeting.

Term Description

Magnetic beads and fluorescent probes are used to capture and detect targeted nucleic acid sequences specific to Pseudomonas aeruginosa within the sodA gene in positive blood culture. The sodA gene encodes "superoxide dismutase", which catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide.
