Part Descriptions

LP62853-4   Ganglioside GM2
Gangliosides are present in the cell membrane and are found predominantly in the nervous system. Ganglioside antibodies against different gangliosides have been associated with different conditions. The GM2 ganglioside, also called Tay-Sachs ganglioside, is a minor component of adult nervous tissue, and pathological storage of GM2 in neurons leads to motor neuron disease. Anti-GM2 IgM antibodies have been found in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome that is associated with CMV infection. Anti-GM2 antibodies have also been associated with an acute inflammatory neuropathy as a potentially paraneoplastic phenomenon. LP222219-0   Ganglioside
A ganglioside molecule consists of a glycosphingolipid (ceramide and oligosaccharide) with one or more sialic acid residues linked to the sugar chain. Molecules with one sialic acid residue are called monosialogangliosides (GM), those with two are called disialogangliosides (GD), and those with three are trisialogangliosides (GT). Gangliosides without any sialic acid residues are called asialogangliosides, while those that do not have a ceramide N-acyl group are called lysogangliosides. The number that typically is included at the end of the name indicates the order in which the molecule was discovered. For example, GM2 is a ganglioside with one sialic acid residue that was the second GM to be identified. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
