Anti-Müllerian hormone also known as AMH is a protein that, in humans, is encoded by the AMH gene. It inhibits the development of the Müllerian ducts (paramesonephric ducts) in the male embryo. It has also been called Müllerian inhibiting factor (MIF), Müllerian inhibiting hormone (MIH), and Müllerian inhibiting substance (MIS). It is named after Johannes Peter Müller.
In men, inadequate embryonal AMH activity can lead to the Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS), in which a rudimentary uterus is present and testes are usually undescended. The AMH gene (AMH) or the gene (AMH-RII) for its receptor are usually abnormal. AMH measurements have also become widely used in the evaluation of testicular presence and function in infants with intersex conditions, ambiguous genitalia, and cryptorchidism. Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) is a gonadal hormone responsible for inducing the degeneration of the Mullerian ducts in male embryogenesis and assists in female egg maturation and release. This glycoprotein ensures that males do not develop a female reproductive tract during their early development and is crucial for females during childbirth. In males, MIS is stored in Sertoli cells in the testes and are released in order to differentiate cells and regulate reproductive tract growth. The MIS content in the blood may be measured in both females and infant boys. The MIS blood content is measured in male infants that have ambiguous genitalia or improperly formed testicles.
