85049-5ESBL by cefotaxime to cefotaxime-clavulanate IC ratio [Presence] by ARD gradient stripActive

Term Description

This term is used to report the presence or absence of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes based on inhibitory concentrations of cefotaxime and cefotaxime+clavulanate. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, bioMerieux's ETEST ESBL assay.

Part Descriptions

LP232453-3   Extended-spectrum beta lactamase by cefotaxime to cefotaxime+clavulanate inhibitory concentration ratio
Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) enzymes are resistance enzymes produced by pathogenic organisms such as E. coli and Klebsiella. The presence of ESBLs can be detected by comparing the inhibitory concentration (IC) of a specific antimicrobial, such as cefepime (a 4th generation cephalosporin), cefotaxime, or ceftazidime (both 3rd generation cephalosporins), with the IC of that antimicrobial plus clavulanate, an ESBL inhibitor. LP234471-3   Gradient strip ARD
A gradient strip is a reagent strip that contains a predefined concentration gradient of a specific antibiotic or combination of antibiotics that is used for antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) and antimicrobial resistance detection (ARD).
For AST, the result is reported in terms of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of a specific antimicrobial that prevents the visible growth of bacteria. In LOINC, the "Gradient strip" method is used for AST gradient strips that result in an MIC result.
For ARD, the result is reported as the presence or absence of a specific enzyme or other mechanism that confers resistance, which is determined based on comparing the inhibitory concentration (IC) of a specific antimicrobial with the IC of that antimicrobial plus a resistance inhibitor. In LOINC, the "Gradient strip ARD" method is used for ARD gradient strips, which are not intended for determining individual MIC values. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
