Tumor budding is the presence of single cells or clusters of less than five cells scattered in the stroma at the margin of an invasive tumor. Tumor budding may be a predictor of regional lymph node involvement and is associated with worse outcomes, including cancer recurrence, in patients with colorectal cancer. [PMID:22669453]
