88380-1 Part 1: Job-related physical activity

Form Coding Instructions

READ: The first questions are about your work. This includes paid jobs, farming, volunteer work, course work and any other unpaid work that you did outside your home. Do not include unpaid work you might do around your home, like housework, yard work, general maintenance, and caring for your family. I will ask you about these later.

Source: International Physical Activity Questionnaires

Form Coding Instructions

For Questions 2-7, READ: The following questions are about all the physical activity you did as part of your paid or unpaid work. This does not include traveling to and from work.

Source: International Physical Activity Questionnaires

Form Coding Instructions

For Questions 2-3, READ: First, think about all the vigorous activities which take hard physical effort that you did as part of your work. Vigorous activities make you breathe much harder than normal. These may include things like heavy lifting, digging, heavy construction work, or climbing up stairs. Think about only those vigorous physical activities that you did for at least 10 minutes at a time.

Source: International Physical Activity Questionnaires

Form Coding Instructions

For Questions 4-5, READ: Now think about activities which take moderate physical effort that you did as part of you work. Moderate physical activities make you breathe somewhat harder than normal and may include activities like carrying light loads. Do not include walking. Again, think about only those moderate physical activities that you did for at least 10 minutes at a time.

Source: International Physical Activity Questionnaires

Form Coding Instructions

For Questions 6-7, READ: Now think about the time you spend walking for at least 10 minutes at a time as part of your work. Please do not count any walking you did to travel to or from work.

88421-3 Walking physical activity.work domain [IPAQ]

Term Description

A patient's walking physical activity in the work domain can be reported as a continuous variable based on the duration (e.g. in minutes) and frequency (e.g. days) of walking as part of their work. The activity level is reported in MET-minutes/week or MET-minutes/day, although the former is more frequently used and is thus suggested.

77591-6 Walking physical activity [IPAQ]

Term Description

A patient's total walking physical activity can be reported as a continuous variable based on the duration (e.g. in minutes) and frequency (e.g. days) of walking over the past 7 days. In the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Long form, the patient is asked separate questions on walking in three domains: at work, for transport, and in leisure time. The total duration and frequency for each of these domains is used to calculate the patient's total walking physical activity level. In the IPAQ Short form, these domains are grouped together into a single question for duration and another for frequency of walking over the past 7 days. The activity level is reported in MET-minutes/week or MET-minutes/day, although the former is more frequently used and is thus suggested.

Calculation for walking physical activity for the long and short IPAQ forms:
Short form: Walking MET-minutes/week = 3.3 * walking minutes/day * walking days/week
Long form: Walking MET-minutes/week = 3.3 * walking minutes/day (at work+for transport+in leisure) * walking days/week (at work+for transport+in leisure)

For the IPAQ, walking is considered a moderate-intensity activity. To determine a total moderate-intensity MET-minutes/week, the walking and moderate totals should be added.

77592-4 Moderate physical activity [IPAQ]

Term Description

A patient's total moderate physical activity can be reported as a continuous variable based on the duration (e.g. in minutes) and frequency (e.g. days) of moderate activity over the past 7 days. In the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Long form, the patient is asked separate questions on moderate physical activity in various domains, including for transport (cycling), at work, doing chores (yard & house), and for recreation, sport, exercise or leisure. The total duration and frequency for these domains is used to calculate the patient's moderate physical activity level. In the IPAQ Short form, these domains are grouped together into a single question for duration and another for frequency of moderate physical activity in the last 7 days. The activity level is reported in MET-minutes/week or MET-minutes/day, although the former is more frequently used and is thus suggested.

Calculation for moderate physical activity for the long and short IPAQ forms:
Short form: Moderate MET-minutes/week = 4.0 * moderate-intensity activity minutes per day * moderate-intensity days per week

Long form: Moderate MET-minutes/week = Cycle MET-minutes/week (Transport) + Moderate MET-minutes/week (Work + Mod Yard chores + Inside chores + Leisure) + Vigorous MET-minutes/week (Vig Yard chores)
where
Cycle MET-minutes/week = 6.0 * Cycling minutes/day * Cycle days/week for transportation
Moderate MET-minutes/week = 4.0 * total moderate activity minutes/day * total moderate days/week (for Work + Mod Yard chores + Inside chores + Leisure)
Vigorous MET-minutes/week = 5.5 * vigorous-intensity activity minutes/day * vigorous-intensity days/week doing yard work

For the IPAQ, walking is considered a moderate-intensity activity. To determine a total moderate-intensity MET-minutes/week, the walking and moderate totals should be added.

Term Description

A patient's total vigorous physical activity can be reported as a continuous variable based on the duration (e.g. in minutes) and frequency (e.g. days) of vigorous activity over the past 7 days. In the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) Long form, the patient is asked separate questions on vigorous physical activity in two domains: at work and in leisure time. The total duration and frequency for these domains is used to calculate the patient's vigorous physical activity level. In the IPAQ Short form, these domains are grouped together into a single question for duration and another for frequency of vigorous physical activity in the last 7 days. The activity level is reported in MET-minutes/week or MET-minutes/day, although the former is more frequently used and is thus suggested.

Calculation for vigorous physical activity for the long and short IPAQ forms:

Term Description

Computation of total weekly physical activity as a continuous variable for the short form requires summation of the duration (in minutes) and frequency (days) of walking, moderate-intensity and vigorous-intensity activities. Domain specific estimates cannot be estimated. The activity level is reported in MET-minutes/week or MET-minutes/day, although the former is more frequently used and is thus suggested. This quantitative total weekly physical activity result can be transformed into a categorical result using [LOINC: 77595-7].

Term Description

Total weekly physical activity can be reported categorically as low, moderate or high based on the quantitative physical activity result [LOINC: 77594-0]. The criteria for these levels have been set taking into account that IPAQ asks questions in all domains of daily life, resulting in higher median MET-minutes estimates than would have been estimated from leisure-time participation alone.
