Part Descriptions
LP15174-3 Morphine
Morphine is an extremely powerful opiate analgesic drug and is the principal active agent in opium. Like other opioids such as heroin, morphine acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) to relieve pain, in particular by targeting the synapses of the arcuate nucleus. Side effects include impairment of mental performance, euphoria, drowsiness, lethargy, and blurred vision. It also decreases hunger, inhibits the cough reflex, and produces constipation. Morphine is highly addictive when compared to other substances, and tolerance and physical and psychological dependence develop quickly. Patients on morphine often report insomnia, visual hallucinations and nightmares.

Opioids refer to all natural, semisynthetic, and synthetic morphine-like drugs. Naturally occurring opiates including morphine and codeine are found in the resin of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). IgE-mediated opioid hypersensitivities are rare and many reactions are caused by direct mast cell degranulation. Codeine is a prodrug that is converted into morphine via the hepatic cytochrome P-450 2D6 (CYP2D6) pathway, creating share similar rates of allergy for both PMID: 28550985.
