Hepatitis A virus cellular receptor (HAVCR) 1 protein, also known by kidney injury molecule 1, KIM-1, TIM-1, and other names, acts as a receptor for multiple viruses, including Hepatitis A, Ebola, Marburg, Dengue, and Zika. It also may play a role in kidney injury and repair, as well as development of T-helper cells. [UniProt: Q96D42] HAVCR-1 is expressed on proximal tubule cells in the kidney and is not detectable in the urine in the absence of disease, making it a specific and sensitive indicator of damage to the proximal tubule. Expression of this protein is associated with tubulointerstitial inflammation, including proteinuric nephropathy. Elevated levels of the protein may be associated with decline in GFR.
