Clostridium perfringens is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacteria that is a major cause of food poisoning in the United States. The disease results from the ingestion food contaminated with enterotoxin-producing C perfringens, usually C perfringens type A. Incubation time is 8–22 hours after ingestion of contaminated food, and symptoms include diarrhea, cramps, and abdominal pain. Fever, nausea, and vomiting are rare, and the disease lasts about 24 hours. C perfringens has also been sporadically reported in association with necrotizing enteritis.
