Part Description

LP105048-5   Proteus sp
Proteus sp. is a genus of rod shaped bacteria characterized by their intensive swarming growth. They are opportunistic pathogens and can be found in urine, feces, wounds, and other clinical sources. Hosts for Proteus sp. include: flies, fish, wild and domestic animals. Proteus sp. presence in soil, is a sign of fecal pollution and poses a risk of water and seafood contamination. Serological and molecular testing are used to determine the specific Proteus sp. strain. Proteus sp. strains can cause a range of illnesses from diarrhea, kidney stones and respiratory tract infections to meningitis. [PMID: 26748500] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
