LP118935-8 LW super little a
Although genetically independent of the Rh system, the Landsteiner Wiener (LW) blood group antigen system is part of the Rh protein cluster and is expressed more strongly on D positive cells. There are 2 antithetical alleles, LW^a and LW^b with 4 possible phenotypes: LW(a+b-), LW(a-b+), LW(a+b+), and LW(a-b-).(Schenkel-Brunner H. (2000) Landsteiner-Wiener System. In: Human Blood Groups. Springer, Vienna) LW^a has much higher prevalence than LW^b in most populations. Hemolytic disease of the newborn due to anti-LW is rare and mild when it does occur [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICAM4].
