Description
LP15489-5 Cholesterol.in HDL
Cholesterol is an essential lipid present in all cells. Cholesterol is needed in order to construct hormones, metabolites, and Vitamin D. Cholesterol travels throughout the bloodstream with the aid of two lipoproteins: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL carries cholesterol from the liver to other parts of the body and HDL carries cholesterol from other parts of the body to the liver where it can be broken down. HDL is considered "good cholesterol" because it removes excess cholesterol from the blood and into the liver where it can be disposed of properly. A higher level of HDL can decrease the risk for heart disease and atherosclerosis. When observing the blood HDL levels, less than 40 mg/dL is too low (high risk for heart disease), 40-59 mg/dL is average, and 60 mg/dL or higher is optimal (low risk for heart disease).
