Description
LP16093-4 Codeine
Codeine is a plant alkaloid of opium that relieves acute or chronic pain and suppresses cough. [https://pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/compound/codeine#section=Top] Codeine is extensively prescribed throughout the world and is frequently combined with non-opiate drugs including acetaminophen and aspirin. Codeine is a tenth as potent as morphine and is considered its prodrug. A small portion of codeine is metabolized by the enzyme CYP2D6 to morphine which is responsible for the analgesic affect of codeine. Variability of the activity of CYP2D6 based on the patient's genotype can influence the ability of codeine to relieve pain.(Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry and Molecular Diagnostics, Seventh Edition; Carl A. Burtis; David E. Bruns, p580)
