LP18624-4 Escherichia coli K1
Escherichia coli strains with the K1 capsule antigen account for the majority (∼80%) of isolates from patients with neonatal E. coli meningitis (NMEC).[PMID:16552050] Bacterial meningitis in neonates is a severe infectious disease with mortality rates varying between 10% and 15%.[PMID:21416693] Infections in adults are less common and usually occur following trauma or surgical procedures.
