Description
LP265768-4 Scedosporium apiospermum
Scedosporium apiospermum is a common filamentous fungus that is present in soil, polluted waters, and sewage throughout the world. Opportunistic infections by S apiospermum have become more common in extremely immunosuppressed patients and are resistant to antifungal medications that are used to treat more common fungal organisms such as Candida and Aspergillus. Common sites for infection include sinuses, lungs, skin, soft tissue, central nervous system, and bones. Systemic spread of infection is often fatal. S apiospermum was originally thought to be a form of Pseudoallescheria boydii, another opportunistic pathogen. [PMID:27182483]
