Version 2.78

Description

RalA is encoded by the RalA gene and is a member of the Ras super-family of small GTPases. RalA antibody is formed in 20.1% of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but in much lower numbers in patients with cirrhosis (3.3%), chronic hepatitis (0%), and with no known disease (0%). Given the high RalA antibody level in response to the development of HCC, RalA antibody may be a possible tumor marker for HCC. RalA helps to sustain tumor production by regulating proliferation and survival of cells. When the expression of RalA is blocked by gene-specific silencing, the ability of human cancer cells to become malignant is greatly disrupted, if not completely prevented, which demonstrates the vital role RalA plays in Ras-induced tumorigenesis. In addition, RalA influences epidermal growth factor (EGF)-mediated cell motility that may contribute to metastasis in human cancer. PMID: 19822090 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
