California encephalitis virus is an arbovirus of the California (CAL) serogroup virus which belongs to the Bunyaviridae family of viruses, and the genus Orthobunyavirus. Other CAL serogroup viruses found in the United States include La Crosse virus (LACV), Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), Snowshoe hare virus, and Trivitattus virus. California encephalitis virus was first isolated in 1943 from mosquitoes. In 1945, 3 cases were isolated in humans.
