Sandfly fever Sicilian virus (SFSV) was identified in Italy in 1943 and belongs to family Phenuiviridae, genus Phlebovirus [NCBI Taxonomy:28292]. The sandfly fever Sicilian serocomplex comprises the ICTV-classified species Dashli phlebovirus, Toros phlebovirus, and Sicilian phlebovirus [PMID:32878929]. Transmission occurs through sandflies and the primary vector is Phlebotomus papatasi [PMID:18439364]. Sandfly fever Naples virus and Sandfly fever Sicilian virus infections share symptoms and clinical similarity.
