The Influenza nucleoprotein antibody test is useful as a screening test for detection of type A influenza viruses such as swine influenza virus (SIV), and influenza A viruses in other species such as equine, canine, and feline. Influenza virus nucleoprotein (NP) switches RNA synthesis from transcription mode to replication mode. It is therefore vital to the infectious cycle of the influenza virus. Although it is required for this process, the function of NP in replication is not yet clear. [PMID:9621005]
Research suggests that the common ancestor of the H1N1 human and classical swine viruses is an avian virus rather than human or swine influenza A viruses. [PMID:2041090]
