This term is used for assays that can detect, but not differentiate between the blaCMY and blaMOX AmpC cephalophorinase genes in gram negative bacterial isolates. If either or both genes are positive, a single result of "positive" is reported. This term was created for, but is not limited in use to, the submitter's modified protocol for the Check-Points Check-MDR CT103XL assay.

Bacterial AmpC beta lactamases confer resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and monobactams and are encoded by either plasmid-mediated or chromosomal genes. Specific AmpC beta lactamase genes include ACC, ACT, FOX, MIR, MOX, CMY and DHA. Other types of bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes include carbapenemases and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL). [PMID:18093140] The genes are named with the prefix "bla", which stands for "beta-lactam", followed by the enzyme, for example, blaACC.
