Description
LP249707-3 Porcine circovirus type 2
Veterinary Medicine:
Porcine circoviruses (PCV) are small nonenveloped DNA viruses in the Circoviridae family that contain a single-stranded circular genome. PCV are the smallest viruses replicating autonomously in eukaryotic cells by utilizing the host polymerase for genome amplification. Two types of PCV have been characterised, PCV1 and PCV2. PCV1 is nonpathogenic in adult pigs, while PCV2 is a major pathogen. [PMID:21945213]. The primary effect of PCV2 is postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Pigs with PMWS have weakness, difficulty breathing, enlarged lymphnodes, diarrhea, and yellowing of the skin. Lesions associated with the presence of PCV2 have been found in the lymphatic system, the lungs, liver, kidney, heart, gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. Co-infection of PCV with porcine parvovirus or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus enhances PMWS. [PMID:10690769]Infection of porcine circovirus in humans is non-productive.[cordis.europa.eu/result/rcn/33358_en.html]
