Description
LP66394-5 Micromegakaryocytes
Micromegakaryocytes are caused by dysmegakaryocytopoiesis, meaning the bone marrow is not making normal megakaryocytes. Micromegakaryocytes are typically seen in the peripheral blood in Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) which are considered "pre-leukemia" syndromes.
The most obvious distinguishing characteristic of a micromegakaryocyte is the cytoplasm which is pale blue and may contain pink granules reminiscent of a mature platelet. Smudge-like nuclear chromatin also aids in the identification of a cell as a micromegakaryocyte.
