Version 2.77

Description

Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum, an anaerobic, gram-positive, spore-forming rod found on plants, in soil, water and the intestinal tracts of animals. Eight exotoxins (A, B, C1, C2, D, E, F and G) have been identified, all of which interfere with neural transmission by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the principal neurotransmitter at the neuromuscular junction. The toxins are used in the clinical management of various spastic medical conditions, strabismus and focal dystonias, hemifacial spasms, headaches, hyper-salivation and hyperhidrosis. Type A is the most potent toxin. In 2002 it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for cosmetological uses. It is administered by injection into muscles or glands with the effects lasting approximately three months. Most patients require multiple treatments over many years and some develop tolerance to the injections due to the development of neutralizing antibodies to the toxin. Side effects are minor and transient. PMID: 20418969 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
