Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an enveloped, positive-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Coronaviridae family of viruses. It is an extremely contagious enteric pathogen of pigs and causes porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). Symptoms of PED include watery diarrhea in pigs that are a few weeks old, dehydration, vomiting, and anorexia. PED has a high morbidity and mortality rate in young piglets. PEDV was first identified in Belgium in 1978, but has caused serious outbreaks since then in Asian pig farming countries including China. Significant outbreaks of PEDV have also occurred in the United States, Canada, Taiwan and Europe. The spike or S protein is one of seven proteins encoded by the 28 kB and resides on the outer surface of the virion. There are two subunits of the S protein which are the N-terminal subunit S1 and the C-terminal subunit S2. These two subunits must be cleaved in order for the virus to attach and enter the host cell. It is secreted at the rate of 0-3 milliliters per minute which is affected by various factors including anxiety, hydration and hunger. Oral fluid is broadly used to test for drugs of abuse in employment and forensic settings, and is especially useful since it is difficult to adulterate, is quick and is non-invasive. Oral fluid is used to test a variety of analytes, including to test alcohol, HIV and other antibodies, therapeutic drugs and steroids, but its primary use is to test for drugs of abuse including amphetamines, cocaine and metabolites, opioids, methadone, cannabis and heroin.
