During inspiration and expiration, airway pressure changes, falling during inspiration and rising during expiration. When a patient has a tracheal tube, these pressure changes can be measured. Causes of high airway pressure include asynchronous breathing, pneumothorax, bronchial obstruction or hyperinflation and bronchospasm. PMCID: PMC3770742
