The forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) is the volume of air that can be exhaled in one second. It is usually measured as part of the forced vital capacity (FVC), which is the total amount of air that can be exhaled in a full forced exhalation. The pattern of FVC, FEV1, and the FEV1/FVC ratio can be used together to determine the type of respiratory disease. A normal or low FVC with an FEV1/FVC of <0.7 indicates obstructive pulmonary disease, while low FVC and FEV1/FVC of >0.7 indicates respiratory disease.
