LP15369-9 Alpha tocopherol
Tocopherols (or TCP) are a class of chemical compounds of which many have vitamin E activity. It is a series of organic compounds consisting of various methylated phenols.
alpha-Tocopherol is the main source found in supplements and in the European diet, while gamma-tocopherol is the most common form in the American diet. The compound alpha-tocopherol, a common form of tocopherol added to food products, is denoted by the E number E307.

Vitamin E is fat soluble, and malabsorption and deficiency may develop in cases of chronic intraluminal intestinal bile deficiency. This has been particularly noted in premature infants and children with biliary atresia or cystic fibrosis (chronic intrahepatic cholestasis). Clinically this may lead to a hemolytic anemia, due to increased erythrocyte fragility, or to a slowly progressive neurologic disorder characterized by ataxia, areflexia, gaze disturbances, and loss of proprioception and vibratory sensation. A similar syndrome has been reported in adults with malabsorption. The syndrome may respond to treatment with parenteral vitamin E.
Early treatment with vitamin E may delay or prevent the neuropathy with ataxia that develops during the course of abetalipoproteinemia. Vitamin E therapy, in some cases, may have a favorable effect on moderate and severe cases of the retinopathy of prematurity and the retinopathy of abetalipoproteinemia. While lipid malabsorption syndrome (with steatorrhea and malabsorption of vitamin E) may be etiologically related to ataxic spinocerebellar neurologic degenerative disease, there are reports of familial and sporadic vitamin E deficiency with neurologic impairment in the absence of fat malabsorption or demonstrated plasma lipoprotein level abnormality. An inherited defect in hepatocyte secretion of vitamin E into lipoprotein has been proposed. The importance of not overlooking a treatable cause of neurologic degenerative disease has been emphasized.
