Endotoxins (not to be confused with enterotoxin) are toxins associated with certain bacteria. An "endotoxin" is a toxin that is a structural molecule of the bacteria that is recognized by the immune system. It differs from exotoxins in that it is not produced by the bacteria to have an effect or to be toxic to its host.

The presence of endotoxins in the blood is called endotoxemia. It can lead to septic shock, if the immune response is severely pronounced. Moreover, endotoxemia of intestinal origin is considered to be an important factor in the development of alcoholic hepatitis, which is likely to develop on the basis of the small bowel bacterial overgrowth syndrome and an increased intestinal permeability.
