Part Description
LP19547-6 Synovial lining cells
The synovial membrane is divided into two compartments, the outer layer (subintima) and the inner layer (intima). The intima is mainly composed of two cell types, specialized macrophage-like synovial cells and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS), which maintain the internal joint homeostasis. These cells represent the main source of hyaluronic acid and also other glycoproteins, major components of the synovial fluid. Synovial lining cell hyperplasia is a typical feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and during the progression of this disease constant inflammatory processes take place in the synovial membrane, eventually leading to cartilage damage and joint destruction and deformation. Due to the changes in proliferative and apoptotic processes the total number of cells increases in the synovium, and significantly increases also the number of fibroblast-like synoviocytes. These cells, together with other immune cells such as macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, mast cells, dendritic cells and platelets, create an inflammatory environment which attract even more immune cells to the damage area, and thus contribute to the joint destruction
