Bordetella pertussis is a species of small, aerobic, gram-negative coccobacilli that infects the human respiratory tract and causes whooping cough. The two toxins produced by B pertussis are pertussis toxin (PT) and adenylate cyclase toxin (ACT). Both are major virulence factors. PT is a protein exotoxin that is encoded by the ptx genes. It is transported to the outer membrane of B pertussis and precipitates systemic symptoms including leukocytosis, hypoglycemia, histamine sensitivity and inhibits neutrophil recruitment and influx to the airways. PT is known to assist B pertussis in gaining entrance into mammalian cells, modifying enzymatic activities and signaling events and to moderate the host immune response. PT is a component of acellular pertussis vaccinations. PMID: 20210554 Antibody testing may be performed to study the spread of infection in an outbreak.
