LP17110-5   Campylobacter jejuni
A species of bacteria that resemble small tightly coiled spirals. Its organisms are known to cause abortion in sheep and fever and enteritis in man and may be associated with enteric diseases of calves, lambs, and other animals. Source: National Library of Medicine, MeSH 2006

LP17110-5   Campylobacter jejuni
Campylobacter jejuni is a species of curved, rod-shaped, non-spore forming, Gram-negative microaerophilic, bacteria commonly found in animal feces. It is one of the most common causes of human gastroenteritis in the world. Food poisoning caused by Campylobacter species can be severely debilitating, but is rarely life-threatening. It has been linked with subsequent development of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which usually develops two to three weeks after the initial illness.

C. jejuni is commonly associated with poultry, and it naturally colonises the digestive tract of many bird species. One study found that 30% of European Starlings in farm settings in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom, were carriers of C. jejuni. It has also been isolated from wombat and kangaroo feces, being a cause of bushwalkers' diarrhea. Contaminated drinking water and unpasteurized milk provide an efficient means for distribution. Contaminated food is a major source of isolated infections, with incorrectly prepared meat and poultry normally the source of the bacteria.

Infection with C. jejuni usually results in enteritis, which is characterised by abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and malaise. The symptoms usually persist for between 24 hours and a week, but may be longer. Diarrhea can vary in severity from loose stools to bloody stools. The disease is usually self-limiting. However, it does respond to antibiotics. Severe (accompanying fevers, blood in stools) or prolonged cases may require ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, azithromycin or norfloxacin. The drug of choice is usually erythromycin. About 90% of cases respond to ciprofloxacin treatment. Fluid and electrolyte replacement may be required for serious cases. LP99310-2   Campylobacter
Campylobacter species is a gram-negative comma or S-shaped motile bacteria. Most infections occur from eating raw or undercooked poultry or by touching a contaminated object. Other sources of Campylobacter include water, animals, and unpasteurized milk. Symptoms begin 2-5 days after being exposed and include bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Some people are asymptomatic. Campylobacter can spread to the bloodstream and cause life-threatening illness in immunocompromised patients. C jejuni is the primary species found in campylobacter infections. Campylobacter is identified in stool, body tissue, and fluid cultures.[https://www.cdc.gov/campylobacter/faq.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC

Change Reason
The EIA method, which was always intended to cover more than just enzyme-linked immunoassay and whose display name for the long common name has always been Immunoassay, was renamed IA in order to eliminate ambiguity about whether the method has a broader meaning than just enzyme-linked immunoassay. Likewise, EIA.rapid was renamed IA.rapid. These changes were approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.
