Risperidone (Belivon®, Rispen®, Risperdal®) is an atypical antipsychotic medication mostly used to treat delusional psychosis (e.g. schizophrenia). It is also used to treat some forms of bipolar disorder, psychotic depression, Tourette syndrome, and autistic spectrum disorders. Risperidone is a dopamine antagonist possessing antiserotonergic, antiadrenergic and antihistaminergic properties. Side effects of risperidone include significant weight gain and metabolic problems, as well as tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Risperidone and other antipsychotics also increase the risk of death in patients with dementia. The major active metabolite of Risperidone is 9-hydroxyrisperidone, which has similar pharmacodynamics to risperidone and remains in the body for much longer. It has also been developed as an antipsychotic and is known as paliperidone.
