The activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) is used to evaluate the functionality of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation. The aPTT can only detect deficiencies of factors VIII, IX, XI, and XII and only if the deficiency is 20-40% of normal. PMID: 23718922 Mixing studies are used to determine if a prolonged aPTT is due to a clotting factor deficiency or an anticoagulant. The patient plasma is diluted with pooled normal plasma and the aPTT is run on that dilution. If the dilution of patient plasma with normal plasma corrects the aPTT, then the patient most likely has a factor deficiency.
