Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential nutrients that include eicosapentaenoate (EPA), docosahexaenoate (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). They are made up of 18-22 carbon atoms with the first double bond at the third carbon from the methyl end of the fatty acid structure.[ http://www.dhaomega3.org/Overview/Structures-of-Omega-3-Fatty-Acids] EPA and DHA are found primarily in fatty fish including salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines and in algae and krill. ALA is present in plant oils including flaxseed, soybean, and canola oils.
