LP16849-9 Crystals
A crystal or crystalline solid is a material composed of atoms, molecules, or ions arranged in a spatial, orderly, repeating pattern. The scientific study of crystals and crystal formation is crystallography. The process of crystal formation is crystallization.

LP16849-9 Crystals
Crystals are formed in urine when solutes precipitate out of solution. Crystals are typically absent in freshly voided urine. Normally they precipitate as the urine cools or after it is refrigerated. Most crystals are not indicative of a pathological process, but when present in freshly voided urine, they indicate that crystals are forming within the body which is clinically important. When crystals develop within the nephrons, serious tubular damage is possible. Since the presence of some crystals in the urine are considered pathological, it is crucial that they be correctly identified and reported. Crystal identification is made based on microscopic physical appearance and urine pH.[Nancy A. Brunzel, Fundamentals of Urine & Body Fluid Analysis, p 189]
