LP18046-0 Drugs
A drug is any biological substance, synthetic or non-synthetic, that is taken for non-dietary needs. It is usually synthesized outside of an organism and it must be introduced into an organism to trigger its effect. Note that natural endogenous biochemicals (such as hormones) can bind to the same receptors and produce the same effect as a drug. Thus, a drug is simply a definition that helps distinguish whether a molecule is synthesized in vivo or in vitro. For instance, insulin is a hormone when it is synthesized in vivo by the pancreas but if it is called a drug if it is introduced into the body.
