It is more abundant in Europe than in America. The most important allergenic proteins in D. pteronyssinus are Der p 1 and Der p 2. 80% of mite-sensitive patients display IgE antibodies to Der p 1 and Der p 2. Cat-allergic patients with IgE antibodies to Fel d 1 have been shown also to react to the corresponding protein of ocelot, puma, serval, siberian tiger, lion, jaguar, and snow leopard. A subgroup of cat-allergic patients also react to dogs and sometimes to other animals. Serum albumin is the main common component. Extensive cross-reactivity even occurs between albumins of distantly related species and subjects with IgE antibodies to cat albumin may also react to horse, cattle, pig, rodents, and fur animals like mink and fox. However, great variability exists between patients and selective sensitivity to limited numbers of species occurs, indicating shared and specific epitopes.



Common and species-restricted epitopes have also been observed on the major cat and dog allergens Fel d 1 and Can f 1.
Allergy to cat dander and pork meat, also referred to as the pork/cat syndrome, was shown to be mediated by IgE antibodies recognizing cat and pig serum albumin. In addition, other kinds of meat may be a risk for patients with this type of sensitivity, as indicated by a case with cat-specific IgE antibodies and exercise-induced anaphylaxis after eating pork or beef. Cladosporium is one of the most common colonizers of dying and dead plants and also occurs in various soil types, and on food. This mold is frequently found in uncleaned refrigerators, foodstuffs, on moist window frames, in houses with poor ventilation, with straw roofs, and situated in low, damp areas. It has been isolated from fuel tanks, face creams, paints and textiles.

In the allergic population, sensitisation to moulds may vary from 5 to 30%. The wide range of allergenic proteins in C. herbarum may result in sensitisation and subsequent expression of a range of immune-related diseases. Cladosporium sensitisation is particularly associated with severe or life-threatening asthma. Upper respiratory symptoms occur with exposure to Cladosporium, but asthma symptoms are more prevalent. Bahia grass (Paspalum notatum), also known as common bahia and Pensacola bahia, is a tropical to subtropical perennial grass (family Poaceae). It is identifiable by its prominent dual, V-shaped inflorescence consisting of two spike-like racemes containing multiple tiny spikelets, each about 2.8-3.5 mm long. The flat, tough-textured leaves are usually hairless, with blades 2-6 mm wide. They are flat, folded, and inrolled, tapering to a fine point. The leaf bases at the terminus of each rhizome usually have a purplish hue. Stems usually reach 20-75 cm tall. The terminal dual racemes are each attached to the top of a slender stem or with one slightly below the other. Infrequently, there may be a third present below the terminal ones. Penicillium has long been recognised as one of the molds most often producing positive skin test reactions in allergic individuals. Inhalation of Penicillium spores in quantities comparable with those encountered by natural exposure can induce both immediate and late asthma in sensitive persons.
