Systemic candidiasis is an invasive yeast infection caused primarily by C. albicans, although other Candida species can also be the cause. It leads to septicemia, endocarditis, meningitis, and rarely as osteomyelitis. Superficial candidiasis is common, but generally only immunocompromised patients have systemic candidiasis. Because Candida species are common contaminants, diagnosis is difficult and requires the elimination of other possible causes. Source: Regenstrief Institute
