Part Descriptions
LP16803-6 Barium
Barium, a soft silvery metallic alkaline earth metal, reacts with water and carbon dioxide and is not found as a free element. The most common naturally occurring minerals are the very insoluble barium sulfate, BaSO4 (barite), and barium carbonate, BaCO3 (witherite). The metal is used to scavenge air in vacuum tubes, as a component of high-temperature superconductors and electroceramics, and is added to steel and cast iron. Water-soluble barium compounds are poisonous. At low doses, barium ions act as a muscle stimulant, whereas higher doses affect the nervous system, causing cardiac irregularities, tremors, weakness, anxiety, dyspnea and paralysis. Barium ions also target the eyes, immune system, heart, respiratory system, and skin, and may cause blindness and sensitization.

LP16805-1 Beryllium
Beryllium (Be) exposure is an industrial hazard for workers in metal extraction, rocket bases, nuclear plants, refining plants, or where coal is burned extensively. Urine excretion is variable and does not correlate with disease. Toxicity from beryllium exposure is latent and chronic inhalation will lead to berylliosis, a chronic allergic-type lung response and chronic lung disease. Beryllium enters the body through the lungs and toxicity has been associated with increased incidence of pulmonary cancers. [Tietz]

5628-3 Cobalt [Mass/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14368-2 Cobalt
Cobalt is a chemical element used to manufacture hard metal alloys, glass, paints and fertilizers. It is also an essential element supplied through dietary intake. High levels of cobalt in patients due to toxic ingestion or occupational exposure can cause erythrocytosis, cardiomyopathy, allergic dermatitis, pulmonary fibrosis, cough and dyspnea.
Veterinary Medicine:
Low levels of cobalt are known to cause anemia in pigs. Daily doses of cobalt sulphate can induce myocardial damage in pigs, but this can be prevented by intramuscular administration of sodium selenite and alpha-tocopherol on previous day.

5618-4 Cesium [Mass/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP16811-9 Cesium
Caesium (also spelled cesium) is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Cs and atomic number 55. It is a soft silvery-gold alkali metal with a melting point of 28 °C which makes it one of the metals that are liquid at or near room temperature. This element is most notably used in atomic clocks.
Although the element is only mildly toxic, it is a hazardous material as a metal and its radioisotopes present a high health risk in case of radiation leaks.
Caesium compounds are rarely encountered by most people, but most are mildly toxic because of chemical similarity of caesium to potassium. Exposure to large amounts of caesium compounds can cause hyperirritability and spasms,

5699-4 Molybdenum [Mass/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP16828-3 Molybdenum
Molybdenum (atomic symbol Mo) is an essential trace element, required for the enzymes xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and nitrate reductase. It is present in very small amounts in the body. Molybdenum is thought to be involved in many important biological processes, including development of the nervous system, waste processing in the kidneys, and energy production in cells. High levels of molybdenum can interfere with the body's uptake of copper, producing copper deficiency. Molybdenum measurements can be used for assessing nutrition (as in total parenteral nutrition, TPN), molybdenum cofactor deficiency, and following patients with molybdenum-containing prostheses.
Veterinary Medicine:
Molybdenum toxicity can occur in cattle or sheep grazing on pastures with alkaline soil or soil contaminated with industrial sources of molybdenum. Molybdenosis in animals results in secondary copper deficiency and presents with a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea, anemia, anorexia, depigmentation on hair or wool, neurologic abnormalities, impaired reproduction, and premature death.(Mineral Tolerance of Animals: Second Revised Edition, 2005)

5676-2 Lead [Mass/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP14259-3 Lead
Lead is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death. Routes of exposure include contaminated air, water, soil, food, and consumer products. Occupational exposure is a common cause of lead poisoning in adults. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates that more than 3 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to lead in the workplace. One of the largest threats to children is lead paint that exists in many older homes. Blood lead levels screen for lead poisoning and monitor treatment as well. The Centers for Disease Control (US) has set the standard elevated blood lead level for adults to be 10 µg/dl of the whole blood. For children the number is set much lower at 5 µg/dl of blood as of 2012 down from a previous 10 µg/dl. The major treatments are removal of the source of lead and chelation therapy. [Wikipedia: Lead_poisoning] Both capillary and venous blood specimens are used for lead testing and they have different reference ranges, so it is important to distinguish the specimen type for both clinical and public health reporting. Capillary samples are more likely to be contaminated by environmental residues present on the skin. Venous blood collected using evacuated tubes and needles certified as lead-free is preferred (NCCLS.2001), however obtaining venous samples from pediatric patients may be be difficult, capillary blood from a finger puncture may be used for screening purposes. If an elevated lead level is detected in capillary blood, a second test on a venous sample is necessary.

5745-5 Thallium [Mass/volume] in Urine
Part Descriptions
LP16837-4 Thallium
Thallium is the chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Tl and atomic number 81. This soft gray malleable poor metal resembles tin but discolors when exposed to air. Thallium is highly toxic and is used in rat poisons and insecticides but since it might also cause cancer (although the EPA does not class it as carcinogen), this use has been cut back or eliminated in many countries. It is also used in infrared detectors. It has even been used in some murders, even earning the nickname Inheritance powder alongside Arsenic.

Testing for uranium isotopes (U238, U235, U234) and depleted uranium (DU) may be performed to determine occupational exposure in the workplaces that involve uranium mining, milling, or processing. Exposure occurs primarily by inhaling dust and other small particles. Exposure to DU may also occur in military personnel from retention internal shrapnel that contains DU or exposure to dust generated from ammunition impact. Health effects from uranium exposure can result from chemical toxicity to the kidney, which can occur occasionally from high occupational exposure.

LP18123-7 Tungsten
Tungsten, also known as wolfram, is a hard, rare metal found in rocks and minerals and in numerous applications, including incandescent light bulb filaments, X-ray tubes, welding elctrodes, and golf clubs. It is also used in the military for armor-piercing munitions. Tungsten is released to the atmosphere by various mechanisms, including windblown dusts and during ore processing, tungsten alloy (hard-metal) fabrication, tungsten carbide production and use, and municipal waste combustion. Individuals who work in manufacturing, fabricating, and reclaiming industries may be exposed to higher levels of tungsten or tungsten compounds compared to the general population. Conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, memory and sensory deficits, and increased mortality due to lung cancer have been attributed to occupational exposure to hard metals, including tungsten.
