5787-7 Epithelial cells [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy high power field
Part Descriptions
LP14043-1 Epithelial cells
Cells that line the inner and outer surfaces of the body by forming cellular layers (epithelium) or masses. Epithelial cells lining the skin, the mouth, the nose, and the anal canal derive from the ectoderm; those lining the respiratory and the digestive systems derive from the endoderm. The cardiovascular and lymphatic systems derive from the mesoderm.

11277-1 Epithelial cells.squamous [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy high power field
Term Description
One of three types of epithelial cells
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP70260-2 Epithelial cells.squamous
Epithelial cells cover the inside and outside of almost all of the body's surfaces. Squamous epithelial cells are flattened and barely visible by light microscopy. They fit closely together in tissues; providing a smooth, low-friction surface over which fluids can move easily. Squamous epithelia are found lining surfaces such as the alveolar epithelium in the lungs. Specialized squamous epithelia also form the lining of cavities such as the blood vessels (endothelium) and pericardium (mesothelium) and the major cavities found within the body.

- Method was changed from 'Microscopy.light.HPF' to 'Microscopy.light'. Differentiating between HPF and LPF light microscopy for ordinal terms (present/absent) is not necessary.; The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. LP17771-4 Transitional cells
Transitional epithelium (also known as urothelium) is a type of tissue consisting of multiple layers of epithelial cells which can contract and expand. These cells, part of the epithelium, are usually found in the urinary tract, especially around the urinary bladder. They are also found in the ureters, superior urethra and gland ducts of the prostate.

11276-3 Tubular cells [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy
Term Description
One of three types of epithelial cells
Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Part Descriptions
LP15194-1 Tubular cells
The tubular cells seen in casts are usually from the collecting tubes, but cells originating from the proximal tubules or any other sections (prior to the collecting tubes) of the nephron is possible. With the PAP stain, Schumann subdivides renal tubular cell casts in RTC and necrotic RTC casts.
A few hyaline RTC casts or RTC casts can occasionally be found in a healthy person's urinary sediment. In this context, these casts have no more clinical meanings than the hyaline casts. The renal tubular cell casts are not associated with a precise pathology, but are found in multiple conditions that affect the renal tubules. The RTC casts are non specific. Pathologies associated with the presence of these casts include acute interstitial nephritis, acute transplant rejection, and tubular necrosis. Necrotic RTC casts are seen in acute tubular necrosis and in nephrotoxic tubular diseases.
The typical renal tubular cell casts are described as hyaline matrix casts, showing two rows of well delimited tubular cells. The two rows criteria is not reliable because the white blood cell casts can also appear with this particularity. Sequestrated tubular cells in a hyaline matrix is possible, but recent studies indicate that the majority of casts of this type are composed of cells fixed to the surface of the casts.

20455-2 Leukocytes [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP14419-3 Leukocytes
Leukocytes or white blood cells (WBCs) are immune cells that fight infection, neoplasms and other inflammatory conditions, and mediate allergic responses. There are five types of WBCs normally present in the circulation that are all derived from a similar stem cell in the bone marrow. The five type of WBCs are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of granules in the cytoplasm. The granulocytes include the neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils. The non-granulocytes include the lymphocytes and the monocytes. The neutrophils fight infection by ingesting and digesting bacteria. Eosinophils and basophils respond to allergic reactions and are capable of ingesting antigen-antibody complexes. Monocytes phagocytose bacteria and release interferon to stimulate the immune system. Lymphocytes are divided into T-cells and B-cells. T-cell immunity is cellular and involves the activation of phagocytes and B-cell immunity uses antibodies to fight infection. Both elevated and low leukocyte counts can be markers of infection and malignancy, and low leukocyte counts are associated with a variety of primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, depending on the WBC type(s) that are out of range. LP31538-9 Leukocyte clumps
Leukocyte clumps are white blood cells grouped together by agglutination. Leukocyte clumps in urine indicate the presence of an infection or inflammation, especially in the kidney (e.g. pyelonephritis, interstitial inflammation, parenchymal infections). Leukocyte clumps in the blood may be associated with cancer, including non-Hodgkins lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

32776-7 Erythrocytes [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP14304-7 Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes or red blood cells (RBCs) are the cells in the circulation that carry oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the tissues throughout the body. They are produced in the bone marrow in response to erythropoietin where they transition through six stages over a seven day period. When they are released into the circulation, their nucleus has been extruded and they measure 6-8 microns in diameter. The lifespan of RBCs is about 120 days. When the RBC ages the cell membrane becomes less pliable and tears as they cell travels through the micro vessels of the body. The damaged RBCs are removed from the circulation by the spleen. Variations in number, shape and size of RBCs are indicative of many diseases and disorders. There are many factors that may lead to decreased numbers of RBCs including hemorrhage, hemolysis, iron or vitamin deficiency, marrow failure and more. Larger than normal RBCs may be indicative of liver disease while smaller than normal RBCs are seen in thalassemias and other anemias.(Mosby's manual of diagnostic and laboratory tests, Kathleen Deska Pagana; Timothy James Pagana, Elsevier St. Louis, Mo ©2010)

26027-3 Histiocytes [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy high power field
Part Descriptions
LP18378-7 Histiocytes
A Histiocyte is a cell that is part of the human immune system. All categories of Histiocytes are derived from the bone marrow by multiplication from a stem cell. The derived cells migrate from the bone marrow to the blood as monocytes. They circulate through the body and stop in various organs where they undergo differentiation into histiocytes which are part of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS).

8248-7 Spermatozoa [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP14765-9 Spermatozoa
A spermatozoon or spermatozoan (pl. spermatozoa), from the ancient Greek (seed) and (living being) is the haploid cell that is the male gamete. After a female ovum is fertilized by a sperm cell it becomes a zygote. Sperm cells contribute half of the genetic information to the diploid offspring and the other hallf is contributed by the female ovum. In mammals, the sex of the offspring is determined by the sperm cells: a spermatozoon bearing a Y chromosome will lead to a male (XY) offspring, whereas one bearing an X chromosome will lead to a female (XX) offspring (the ovum always provides an X chromosome). Sperm cells were first observed by a student of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in 1677.
