5769-5 Bacteria [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy high power field
Part Descriptions
LP14082-9 Bacteria
One of the three domains of life (the others being Eukarya and Archaea), also called Eubacteria. They are unicellular prokaryotic microorganisms which generally possess rigid cell walls and multiply by cell division. They exhibit three principal forms: round or coccal, rodlike or bacillary, and spiral or spirochetal. Bacteria can be classified by their response to oxygen (aerobic, anaerobic, or facultatively anaerobic) and by how they obtain their energy (chemotrophic, i.e. via a chemical reaction or phototrophic, via a light reaction). In addition, chemotrophs obtain their energy from chemicals, lithotrophic from inorganic compounds and organotrophic from organic compounds. Bacteria are also classified by the source carbon that they utilize: heterotrophic, from organic sources or autotrophic, from carbon dioxide. They can also be classified by whether or not they stain (based on the structure of their cell walls) with crystal violet dye: gram-negative or gram-positive.

33017-5 Parasites [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy low power field
Part Descriptions
LP14835-0 Parasites
Parasitism is one version of symbiosis (living together), a phenomenon in which two organisms which are phylogenetically unrelated co-exist over a prolonged period of time, usually their entire life. The requirement for a prolonged interaction precludes predatory or episodic interactions (such as a mosquito feeding on a host), which are usually not seen as symbiotic relationships. Symbiosis encompasses commensalism (eating at the same table, wherein two organisms co-exist in the same space, and one organism benefits while neither harming nor helping the other), through mutualism (wherein both species benefit from the interaction) to parasitism, wherein one organism, usually physically smaller of the two (the parasite) benefits and the other (the host) is harmed. (Various forms of social parasitism, kleptoparasitism, and cheating parasitism, as discussed below, are characterized by a less close association between parasite and host, however.

LP14835-0 Parasites
Invertebrate organisms that live on or in another organism (the host), and benefit at the expense of the other. Traditionally excluded from definition of parasites are pathogenic BACTERIA; FUNGI; VIRUSES; and PLANTS; though they may live parasitically.

33905-1 Trichomonas sp [#/area] in Urine sediment by Microscopy high power field
Part Descriptions
LP14850-9 Trichomonas sp
A genus of parasitic flagellated protozoans with four anterior flagellae, an undulating membrane, and a trailing flagellum. The clinically relevant species, Trichomonas vaginalis, causes a sexually transmitted disease that is more commonly symptomatic in females. Infection with T. vaginalis can increase susceptibility to HIV infection. There are only 2 species found in humans: Trichomonas vaginalis, a pathogen generally living inside the human urinogenital tract, and Trichomonas tenax, an organism found in the oral cavity of humans, cats, and dogs.

32356-8 Yeast [Presence] in Urine sediment by Light microscopy
Part Descriptions
LP29134-1 Yeast
Fungi are eukaryotic microorganisms which manifest as yeasts, molds or a combination. Yeasts start as individual cells that reproduce by budding. Molds, which are long filaments or hyphae, grow by apical extension. Both yeasts and molds are heterotrophic and digest their food externally by absorptive nutrition. Taxonomically, yeast are characterized by their size and shape, the presence or absence of capsules, conidiogenesis (the process of daughter cell formation), presence of sexual spores, the formation of pseudo-and true hyphae and physiologic data. Species are differentiated based on the ability to assimilate and ferment carbon sources, and to utilize nitrate as nitrogen. Some opportunistic fungal pathogens found in humans are dimorphic. They grow as mycelium in nature and reproduce as yeast in the body. One example is Candida which can quickly transform from yeast to the hyphal phase in humans; this process helps it invade host tissue. [NCBI Books:NBK8125]

Part Descriptions
LP19485-9 Yeast.budding
Yeasts are eukaryotic unicellular microorganisms of the kingdom Fungi with about 1,500 species. Most reproduce asexually by budding, although a few do so by binary fission. Budding yeasts possess either one (haploid) or two (diploid) genomes and they reproduce by forming buds (hence the name) during mitosis.
