Term Description
The interviewer asks the respondent if he or she considers himself or herself to be Hispanic or Latino and, if so, asks an additional question about his or her specific Hispanic origin is asked. One or more Hispanic origin categories may be selected. If the respondent answers "yes" to the first question, then the interviewer should proceed to the next question, which includes the categories of Hispanic origin or ancestry. For the follow-up question, the interviewer should hand the respondent a card with the list of categories and read the categories, if necessary. Ethnicity must be asked prior to race. Some Hispanic respondents are confused by the race question if it is asked first.
