Intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL) and Very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) are two of the five major groups of lipoproteins (chylomicrons, VLDL, IDL, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)) that enable fats and cholesterol to move within the water-based solution of the bloodstream. IDL is a triglyceride rich, apo B-containing, lipoprotein intermediate in density and size between LDL and VLDL. VLDL is assembled in the liver from cholesterol and apolipoproteins. When the triglycerides in VLDL are removed by lipoprotein lipase, VLDL is converted to a smaller particle with a new name, intermediate-density lipoprotein (IDL). Moderately increased levels of IDL and VLDL cholesterol are closely associated with coronary artery disease. Abnormally low levels of cholesterol are termed hypocholesterolemia, which may be linked to depression, cancer, and cerebral hemorrhage.
