Perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (p-ANCAs) specific to formalin-sensitive proteins, such as lactoferrin, elastase, BPI, cathepsin G, lysozyme and ß-glucuronidase, show no fluorescence staining on formalin-fixed polymorphonuclear (PMN) cells. Formalin-sensitive p-ANCAs may be evidence for wide range of non-vasculitic disorders, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, primary sclerosing cholangitis, autoimmune liver diseases, collagenosis, rheumatoid arthritis, malignancies and infections.
