Staphylococcus aureus methicillin resistance SCCmec [Presence] in Nose by NAA with probe detection
Active
Term Description
Detection of nucleic acid sequences specific to staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec), a genomic island found in methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This term was created for, but not limited in use to, Cepheid's Xpert MRSA/SA Nasal assay, a qualitative real-time PCR test that detects Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) DNA from nasal swabs in patients at risk for nasal colonization. Primers and probes are used to detect sequences of the staphylococcal protein A (spa), the gene for methicillin/oxacillin resistance (mecA), and the staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCCmec) inserted into the Staphylococcus aureus chromosomal attB site.
Part Description
LP171727-3 Staphylococcus aureus methicillin resistance SCCmec
SCCmec, or staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec, is a mobile genetic element of Staphylococcus bacterial species. This genetic sequence includes the mecA gene coding for resistance to the antibiotic methicillin and is the only known way for Staphylococcus strains to spread the gene in the wild by horizontal gene transfer.

- Change Reason
- The PrThr property is used for LOINC terms whose results are reported using an ordered categorical scale, regardless of whether or not an internal threshold was used to make that determination. This change was approved by the Laboratory LOINC Committee in June 2016.; Removed parentheses around SCCmec in Component based on our current LOINC model.
