Polyols, or polyhydric alcohols, are sugar-derived metabolites for which little is known. Until recently, galactosemia was the only inborn error of metabolims that resulted in accumlation of a polyol. Recently other disorders causing severe effects on white matter have been defined. The poyol pathway, also called the sorbitol-aldose reductase pathway, is thought to be implicated in diabetic complications, primarily in microvascular damage to the retina, kidney, and nerves. Sorbitol cannot cross cell membranes, and, when it accumulates, it produces osmotic stresses on cells by drawing water into the insulin-independent tissues. Source: Regenstrief Help, Polyol pathway
