LP14597-6 Platelets
Platelets are miniature fragments of cytoplasm that break off of megakaryocytes. Their primary function is to inhibit excessive hemorrhage after blood vessel injury. Platelets cling to the damaged part of the blood vessel where they become activated, recruit other platelets to the site, and begin the cascade of physical and chemical events that lead to clot formation. Activated platelets secrete cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors, all which play a role in thrombus development. When activated, platelets stimulate monocytes and neutrophils to leave the blood vessel and enter the tissue. PMID: 27226790 The normal range of platelets is 150,000 to 450,000 platelets/uL. Lower than normal platelet counts can lead to increased bleeding and is caused by a number of factors including: chemotherapy, autoimmune disorders and some medications. Increased platelets can cause hypercoagulation due to cancer, anemia, spleen removal and some medications.[MedlinePlus Encyclopedia:003647]

71804-9 Serotonin [Entitic substance] in Platelets
Part Descriptions
LP14693-3 Serotonin
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, or 5-HT) is a monoamine neurotransmitter synthesized in serotonergic neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) and enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract. In the central nervous system, serotonin is believed to play an important role in the regulation of mood, sleep, emesis (vomiting), sexuality and appetite. Low levels of Serotonin have been associated with several disorders, notably depression, migraine, bipolar disorder and anxiety. Isolated and named in 1948 by Maurice M. Rapport, the name serotonin is something of a misnomer and reflects the circumstances of the compound's discovery. It was initially identified as a vasoconstrictor substance in blood serum hence serotonin, a serum agent affecting vascular tone. This agent was later chemically identified as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) by Rapport, and, as the broad range of physiological roles were elucidated, 5-HT became the preferred name in the pharmacological field.

LP14693-3 Serotonin
A biochemical messenger and regulator, synthesized from the essential amino acid L-TRYPTOPHAN. In humans it is found primarily in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, and blood platelets. Serotonin mediates several important physiological functions including neurotransmission, gastrointestinal motility, hemostasis, and cardiovascular integrity. Multiple receptor families (RECEPTORS, SEROTONIN) explain the broad physiological actions and distribution of this biochemical mediator.

74769-1 5-Hydroxyindoleacetate [Moles/volume] in Platelet rich plasma
Term Description
Determination of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) levels in platelet rich plasma is useful in diagnosing carcinoid tumors in patients with symptoms suggestive of carcinoid syndrome.

Part Descriptions
LP15097-6 5-Hydroxyindoleacetate
5-hydroxyindoleacetate (5HIAA) is a metabolite of serotonin and is excreted in the urine. Serotonin is produced in large amounts by carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing tumors usually found in the lining of the digestive tract or in the lungs. The serotonin that is released by the carcinoid tumors is metabolized by monoamine oxidase in the liver, lungs, and brain to 5HIAA. Testing for elevated levels of 5HIAA in 24 hour urine specimens is 73% sensitive and 100% specific for the diagnosis of carcinoid tumors. A fasting plasma 5HIAA correlates to a urine 5HIAA and other relevant biomarkers. PMID: 17576444[https://medlineplus.gov/carcinoidtumors.html] PMID: 23160483

LP15931-6 Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an amino acid and essential in human nutrition. It is one of the 20 amino acids in the genetic code (codon UGG). Only the L-stereoisomer appears in mammalian protein, however the D-stereoisomer is occasionally found in natural materials (for example, the marine venom peptide contryphan).

LP15931-6 Tryptophan
An essential amino acid that is necessary for normal growth in infants and for NITROGEN balance in adults. It is a precursor of INDOLE ALKALOIDS in plants. It is a precursor of SEROTONIN (hence its use as an antidepressant and sleep aid). It can be a precursor to NIACIN, albeit inefficiently, in mammals.

LP15931-6 Tryptophan
Tryptophoan (or L-tryptophan) is an amino acid, a protein building block that can be found in many plant and animal proteins. L-tryptophan is called an "essential" amino acid because the body can't make it. It must be acquired from food. L-tryptophan is used for insomnia, sleep apnea, depression, anxiety, facial pain, a severe form of premenstrual syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), smoking cessation, grinding teeth during sleep (bruxism), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette's syndrome, and to improve athletic performance. L-tryptophan is naturally found in animal and plant proteins. L-tryptophan is considered an essential amino acid because our bodies can't make it. It is important for the development and functioning of many organs in the body. After absorbing L-tryptophan from food, our bodies convert it to 5-HTP (5-hyrdoxytryptophan), and then to serotonin. Serotonin is a hormone that transmits signals between nerve cells. It also causes blood vessels to narrow. Changes in the level of serotonin in the brain can alter mood.
