Immunoassay for the in vitro quantitative determination of soluble fms-like tyrosine-1 (sFlt-1) in human serum. This assay is intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of preeclampsia, in conjunction with the PlGF assay and other diagnostic and clinical information. This term is based on, but not limited in use to, the Elecsys sFlt-1 assay.

Soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1 or sVEGFR-1) is a tyrosine kinase protein that disables proteins that cause blood vessel growth. Soluble Flt-1 (sFlt-1) is a splice variant of VEGF receptor 1 (Flt-1) which is produced by a variety of tissues.1 These proteins act as a receptor of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a potent angiogenic growth factor. sFlt-1 levels are higher and PIGF levels lower in women that develop preeclampsia than women with a normal pregnancy. The sFlt-1/PIGF ratio may be a better indicator of preeclampsia than either value by itself. This term is based on, but not limited in use to, the Elecsys PIGF (Human placental growth factor) and sFlt-1 assays.
